What should I look for in a school board candidate?
First of all, you'll want to find out where the candidates stand on issues that are important to you.

You might also look for the following qualities:
• The ability to work well with a team and support group decisions
• A desire to work toward a stronger relationship between the district and the public it serves
• A keen eye toward serving the needs of all students, regardless of their abilities and backgrounds
• A professional, poised demeanor and respectful, respectable behavior
• Respect for diverse points of view
• Commitment to the time and energy required each week for meetings, phone calls, conversations, visits to schools, and professional development seminars and workshops
• Knowledge about district policies, guidelines, needs, challenges and strengths

At the heart of it all, members of a district's board of education must believe, unequivocally, in the value of public education. They must be dedicated to serving and teaching all children. They must believe in the democratic process and understand that their role is to act strategically, in line with the interests of the entire school community.

STUDENTS INSIDE ALBANY PROGRAM
Queensbury, NY – Madison Malone Kircher, a Senior from Queensbury High School, has been chosen to attend this year’s Students Inside Albany program sponsored by the League of Women Voters of New York State Education Foundation, Inc. This ninth annual Students Inside Albany program will take place from April 11-14, 2010, and will bring approximately 40 students from across the state to Albany to get a first-hand education about their state government. The program is designed to increase high school students' awareness of their responsibility in representative government and provide information about the tools necessary for meeting that responsibility.

While at the conference, students will join their peers in a hands-on learning experience about how state government works.  Students will participate in a series of interactive lectures on topics such as the state budget process, the role of lobbyists in the legislative process, citizen rights to access government information, the role of media in politics, and the move to reform state government.  While in Albany, the students will have an opportunity to tour the state’s Capitol. The highlight for most students is the opportunity to shadow their Senators and/or their Assembly member for an afternoon, with many students getting the opportunity to attend session on the Chamber floor.
With heavy hearts on April 22, 2010 we had to say goodbye to
Betty Carpenter Monahan
She was passionate about preserving democracy and had a gift for organization. She was a long time member of the Greater Glens Falls League and a Founding Member of our League of Women Voters of Warren County MAL. She will be deeply missed.

Healthcare Reform

On Sunday, February 7th,
the Unitarian Universalist
Congregation of Glens Falls
and the League of Women
Voters of Warren County
co-sponsored a health care
reform symposium open to
the public.  In attendance
were Dr. John Rugge of
Hudson Headwaters Health
Network, NY Assembly-
member Teresa Sayward
and Mark Luciano
representing Congressman
Scott Murphy.

Since formal adoption by its National Board in April 1993, the League has supported basic quality health care for all U.S. residents financed through general taxes, with effective cost control strategies and equitable distribution of services.

Personal stories were shared of critical comprehensive care provided by NY Child Health Plus, the enormous premium cost of individual health insurance policies and the ease of health care for U.S. travelers in Europe.

Rugge presented the Medical Home initiative, a pilot project for northeastern NY to better support primary care physicians in rural areas, and to improve quality of care
through electronic information sharing, proactive planning and
uniform insurance standards of care.  This program was
developed to address the anticipated retirement of a critical
number of primary care physicians in the Adirondack Park
region. The five year pilot plan will run from January 1, 2010
through 2014. It is one of the largest local initiatives being
pursued across the the country to improve health care delivery
efficiently and economically.

Sayward was instrumental in obtaining funding and assistance
from state agencies to ensure cooperation from insurance
companies.

Luciano confirmed Murphy's support of a public option to cover more Americans, but remains concerned about the cost of the bill passed in the House. The difference between the House and Senate bill will need to be resolved in joint conference committe.

League members attended Scott Murphy's Congress on Your Corner April 2, 2010 at West Mountain in Queensbury. The Congressman addressed current issues and took questions from the audience.

Yorkers are fed up! Scandals have driven from office Governor Spitzer, Comptroller Hevesi, Senate Majority Leader Bruno and a growing number of state legislators.  Some elected officials - including Governor Paterson - are currently under investigation.  Many of these abuses of power were rooted in the absence of effective and independent ethics and fiscal watchdogs, tough ethics laws and adequate transparency in government.

Thank you Bob Freeman from the Department of State Committee on Open Government for speaking to our league and the American Association of University Women on the subject of Open Meetings Law and Freedom of Information Law. For a copy of New York's Open Government Laws
